floor plan
This house is referred to as a 4K meaning it has 4 rooms plus a kitchen. The number 6 and 8 refer to the number of tatami in each room. A tatami mat is approximately 1.8m x 0.9m. This size varies between regions slightly. The kitchen does not have tatami mats, the number allow us to judge the space.
purchase costs
purchase price | ¥300,000 |
scriveners fee* | ¥120,000 |
agent commission | ¥15,000 |
annual fixed assets tax | ¥13,000 |
*scriveners fee is for the most part unavoidable. I have read of one foreign resident that did the work himself but I think he had a native command of Japanese. Scriveners prepare and submit the change of owner documents to the national land registry. No matter the price of the property the fee seems to be fixed

Hey man, good job there! I also live in an inaka house in Okayama and do a lot of repairs. I started a reddit group for foreigners who do DIY in Japan. You should join. Definitely a good place to ask some stupid questions! https://www.reddit.com/r/diyjapan
Also you can read about our place on my http://blog.daniel-klose.com
